"Survival Benefit From Transplantation in Patients Listed for Heart Transplantation in the United States"
JACC April 2014
http://jacc.org/
"Conclusions  The risk for waiting list mortality varies considerably among HT candidates. Although the survival benefit of HT generally increases with increasing risk for waiting list mortality, there is no measurable benefit in many candidates at the lower end of the risk spectrum."

"Age-Adjusted D-Dimer Cutoff Levels to Rule Out Pulmonary Embolism
The ADJUST-PE Study"
http://jama.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=1841967
"Conclusions and Relevance  Compared with a fixed D-dimer cutoff of 500 µg/L, the combination of pretest clinical probability assessment with age-adjusted D-dimer cutoff was associated with a larger number of patients in whom PE could be considered ruled out with a low likelihood of subsequent clinical venous thromboembolism."

"Sodium Excretion and Risk of Developing Coronary Heart Disease"
Circ
http://circ.ahajournals.org/content/129/10/1121.abstract
"Conclusions—Overall, there was no association between sodium excretion and risk of CHD. The association between sodium excretion and CHD risk was modified by NT-proBNP. Higher sodium excretion was associated with an increased CHD risk among subjects with increased NT-proBNP concentrations or with hypertension."

"Associations between exposure to takeaway food outlets, takeaway food consumption, and body weight in Cambridgeshire, UK"
BMJ
http://www.bmj.com/content/348/bmj.g1464
"Conclusions Exposure to takeaway food outlets in home, work, and commuting environments combined was associated with marginally higher consumption of takeaway food, greater body mass index, and greater odds of obesity. Government strategies to promote healthier diets through planning restrictions for takeaway food could be most effective if focused around the workplace."

NEJM
http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMsa1308261?query=featured_home
"CONCLUSIONS

Implementation of surgical safety checklists in Ontario, Canada, was not associated with significant reductions in operative mortality or complications. (Funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.)"

"Prevalence, Characteristics, and Publication of Discontinued Randomized Trials"
JAMA
http://jama.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=1840235
"Conclusions and Relevance  In this sample of trials based on RCT protocols from 6 research ethics committees, discontinuation was common, with poor recruitment being the most frequently reported reason. Greater efforts are needed to ensure the reporting of trial discontinuation to research ethics committees and the publication of results of discontinued trials."

"ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction Treated by Radial or Femoral Approach in a Multicenter Randomized Clinical Trial"
JACC March 2014
J Am Coll Cardiol. 2014;63(10):964-972. doi:10.1016/j.jacc.2013.08.1651
http://jacc.org/
"Conclusions  In patients with STEMI undergoing primary PCI by operators experienced in both access sites, the radial approach was associated with significantly lower incidence of major bleeding and access site complications and superior net clinical benefit. These findings support the use of the radial approach in primary PCI as first choice after proper training. (Trial Comparing Radial and Femoral Approach in Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention [PCI] [STEMI-RADIAL]; NCT01136187)"

"Exclusion of deep vein thrombosis using the Wells rule in clinically important subgroups: individual patient data meta-analysis"
BMJ
http://www.bmj.com/content/348/bmj.g366/rr/689698
"Conclusion Combined with a negative D-dimer test result (both quantitative and qualitative), deep vein thrombosis can be excluded in patients with an unlikely score on the Wells rule. This finding is true for both sexes, as well as for patients presenting in primary and hospital care. In patients with cancer, the combination is neither safe nor efficient. For patients with suspected recurrent disease, one extra point should be added to the rule to enable a safe exclusion."

"Radical Prostatectomy or Watchful Waiting in Early Prostate Cancer"
NEJM
http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1311593
"CONCLUSIONS
Extended follow-up confirmed a substantial reduction in mortality after radical prostatectomy; the number needed to treat to prevent one death continued to decrease when the treatment was modified according to age at diagnosis and tumor risk. A large proportion of long-term survivors in the watchful-waiting group have not required any palliative treatment. (Funded by the Swedish Cancer Society and others.)"

"Warfarin, Kidney Dysfunction, and Outcomes Following Acute Myocardial Infarction in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation"
JAMA
http://jama.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=1835505
"Conclusions and Relevance  Warfarin treatment was associated with a lower 1-year risk for the composite outcome of death, MI, and ischemic stroke without a higher risk of bleeding in consecutive acute MI patients with atrial fibrillation. This association was not related to the severity of concurrent CKD."

JACChttp://jacc.org/
Volume 63, Issue 9, March 2014
"
Conclusions  Rivaroxaban and warfarin had similar risk for major/nonmajor clinically relevant bleeding. Age, sex, DBP, prior GI bleeding, prior acetylsalicylic acid use, and anemia were associated with the risk of major bleeding. (An Efficacy and Safety Study of Rivaroxaban With Warfarin for the Prevention of Stroke and Non-Central Nervous System Systemic Embolism in Patients With Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation: NCT00403767)"

"CONCLUSIONS
In a general obstetrical population, prenatal testing with the use of cfDNA had significantly lower false positive rates and higher positive predictive values for detection of trisomies 21 and 18 than standard screening. (Funded by Illumina; ClinicalTrials.gov number,NCT01663350.)"
